Happy Labor Day to all those out there.
I'll be getting the beans together to bake in the oven shortly. We've got a recipe that takes an hour or so in the oven and turns those Musical Fruit into something sweet and savory to serve on the side with some burgers on the grill, homemade burger buns (even though someone got some commercially made), and some extra sharp cheddar cheese.
Pretty typical isn't it? Here most folks have gravitated toward a "fin de ete" celebration around this time of year.
Except in Florida where Summer lasts 11 months and 2 weeks where I am. Never quite ends in the Keys, but it does cool down. Hearing my neighbors pine for October and an end to the heat has me scratching my head, but when it gets below 70 I have on my leather jacket and sometimes even leather pat-down gloves if it hits that rare 40 degree day.
That isn't the reason for the day, it is a day for those workers who literally fought and died for things we take for granted like the 40 hour work week, fair and ethical treatment in the work place, and the right to organize without being shot at, literally.
So enjoy your burgers, beans, and fries. Even if it is a heavy meal, it's a good one. But do give a thought to those who gave their all, before you, to present yourself with this chance to have that meal by the pool.
If you want to read more about the real history behind the day, I suggest a look here.
